Let’s rethink plastic: nano-functionalization for smart plastics and paper based products

On April 1, the EU-funded initiative FlexFunction2Sustain was launched. The project, financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, will support Plastics and Paper Processing Industry in overcoming environmental challenges while entering the digital age. The initiative aims to significantly reduce the expenditure of time and development costs from the idea to the market launch of new products by creating an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) for nano-functionalization technologies that enable sustainable and smart plastics and paper based products. 

The OITB will support its customers in material and product design, in process and product development, in product verification and certification, with pilot and small series production services and with accessing new markets and business opportunities. Thereby FlexFunction2Sustain uniquely interconnects renowned Universities, Applied Research Organizations, and Companies offering pilot production services with Business Development, Networking and Intellectual Property Experts to support customers in any stage of the innovation chain. The Fraunhofer FEP contributes its many years of expertise in areas such as coating processes at atmospheric pressure and in vacuum or technologies for flexible electronics and also acts as project coordinator.
